The Bootcamps as an education model

Bootcamps are intensive, short-term training programs usually in coding. The Bootcamps started when tech companies have an extremely hard time finding software engineers. Soon then it was clear that the educational system focuses heavily on theory, and does not teach the practical skills that industry is demanding. So the first Bootcamp started at the end of 2011 with one person posting offering to teach 6 people to code on Hacker News. After this day a lot of bootcamps were created, lately, Data Science bootcamp came up also. Fast forward to 2020, and there are at least 113 dedicated data science bootcamps worldwide… up from only 14 just five years earlier.

The Bootcamps use more than any other educational system the active learning method instead of the traditional passive learning method. Active learning is any learning activity in which the student participates or interacts with the learning process, as opposed to passively taking in the information. It is a process that has student learning at its center. Active learning focuses on how students learn, not just on what they learn. Students are encouraged to ‘think hard’, rather than passively receive information from the teacher. Research shows us that it is not possible to transmit understanding to students by simply telling them what they need to know. With active learning, students build knowledge and understanding in response to opportunities provided by their instructor.

Bootcamp is using the active learning method

Data science Bootcamp has many benefits because they are intensive, focused, short, and affordable, so they are great for people who are ready to have a university degree and they want to make a career change or want to find a job faster. Data science Bootcamps are often taught by industry professionals therefore you can gain up-to-date knowledge and insights into the field. During Covid pandemic period educational system, as all of us, face several challenges. The education priorities are reforming and live online Bootcamp will have a central role in education.
